What is the LSP?

LSP meetings 2005 / 2006

The Wandsworth Local Strategic Partnership (WLSP) is a body made up of the key stakeholders and decision makers in the Borough. The Partnership was established in September 2002 and includes the Leader of the Council, the Borough Commander, the Chief Executive of the Primary Care Trust and the Learning and Skills Council, amongst others. The WLSP also includes representatives of Wandsworth Community Empowerment Network (WCEN), whose role is to provide a community and neighbourhood perspective to the discussions and decisions that are made.

The WLSP has been set up to develop and deliver the Borough’s Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy (NRS) and to oversee the Borough’s Community Strategy. The NRS is an initiative that aims to identify and target the areas in the Borough that are most deprived and in need of intervention and coordinate and deliver services much more effectively to them ( The areas identified for the purpose of the NRS are Battersea, Balham and Tooting and Roehampton). The idea is for the partners to “join up” their various strategies and services so that there is not only a coordinated approach to tackling issues of concern but that a maximum benefit can be derived if done in this way. Because the areas identified in the NRS have multi deprivation ( low educational attainment in schools, high levels of crime, poor housing, high levels of unemployment) they can only be addressed if the main public service providers ( the police, the health service, education department, job centres etc) and communities work together to address them.

Whilst the WLSP has an initial focus on the Neighbourhood Renewal areas, it also provides an opportunity for key stakeholders and decision makers in the Borough to begin to work together, with local communities, in addressing similar issues across the Borough as a whole, by disseminating information about strategies and solutions amongst themselves and to other providers, by developing new ways of working and by engaging public service providers much more closely and directly with the users of their services; local communities.

The WCEN role is to disseminate information from the WLSP to local communities and neighbourhoods as well as to empower local communities and groups to participate in decision making processes. We do this through are Area Forums and Networks. Our aim is to support, assist and empower members of the community to participate in the WLSP processes and the NRS.
